MHM#73 Sales doesn't have to be a dirty word
Sep 06, 2026I know the word sales can feel pretty gross and uncomfortable. It can bring up ideas of being pushy, convincing people to work with you, or trying to sell someone something they don't really need.
But sales is still part of running a private therapy practice, and I think it can be helpful to look at it through a different lens.
Good sales isn't about convincing someone to work with you. It's about getting in front of the right people and making it as easy as possible for them to see that you work with people just like them, understand how you might be able to help, and know what they need to do next.
That's really what good therapy marketing is doing.
We're creating enough visibility that the right people can find us, and enough connection and trust that when they do, they can think, this person gets what I'm struggling with. They work with people like me. Maybe they could help me.
And then we're making the next step really clear and easy.
That might mean having a website that clearly explains who you work with and how you help. It might mean talking about your approach in a way that actually means something to your ideal client. It might mean having a clear way to book an appointment or offering a free initial call for someone who isn't quite ready to book.
None of that is about pressure or convincing someone that you're the right therapist for them. It's simply making it easier for the right person to find you, connect with you and decide for themselves whether they'd like to take the next step.
